his hunter socks, wip

Finally getting around to photograph these socks in progress for Jason. I ran out of yarn at about halfway through the second sock, and had to get a new skein in a different dye lot to finish it. Here's where they are now, right before I continue onto the reinforced slip stitch toe with my accent color. [you may notice that I'm using the same yarn for his trigger gloves--gotta use every last yard of my stash!]
It was a small discovery here--the Mercury colorway is very blue. I think it looks really nice paired with the heathery grey used for the body of the sock. I'm pleased with this little accident here.
The change in yarn dye lot is a little hard to notice in the above pic, [GOOD!] but every now and then the line of separation's really clear. I made a couple of tries with my camera to show where the difference is in foot of my second sock.
Sure, a more patient me could have frogged this entire sock and made the second one in this new skein's color--the socks wouldn't quite match together, but there wouldn't be a stripe like this. I'm not a patient me though, especially not right now. Jason assures me that he'll love the living crap out of this pair anyway, and if they hold together under his care and frequent use, I'll call this project a success. [and if they don't, I definitely will have the leftover yarn to darn these with!]
I'm going to take this beautiful pair as a reminder to not sweat the small stuff. After this, I'll be on to the next pair of Hunter's Socks, this time, just for me.

socks!

yarn : knitpicks comfy sport in sweet potato
needle : US 3[3.25mm]
size : 9
Realized I never posted any photos of this finished pair, so here they are! I'm in love with the color of this pair and am really glad to have enough yarn leftover for a new pair. I'm not sure if comfy sport was the right choice for socks, as they pilled like crazy. This is really the only sock that fits me well right now, so I don't think I'll retire them for their pilling.
pattern : TDTU Vanilla Sock
yarn : patons kroy socks fx in cadet colors
needle : US 1[2.25mm]
size : ~10
These socks just might have been the ones to get me addicted to sock knitting right now. The colors are just gorgeous and I loved how they looked all knit up! Rachel Roue's pattern was a great intro to toe-up socks, which as I mentioned before, seem just the kind of sock construction for me, since I really enjoy using every last bit of my yarn for each project.
Unfortunately in this case I did get a little knit happy and found out only after binding the first sock off that I made the foot about an inch too long. Instead of frogging and reworking all of those little rows, I just made the second one to match. Because I'm just that kind of knitter. That extra inch isn't a big deal, right? I'm in my 20s, but I'll grow into it somehow.
Last night, these poor socks went through the washer by mistake and came out a little fuzzier than before. That sort of gave my heart a jump but things could have been a lot worse. It's not like I washed with hot water, and this isn't fully wool. But it may be worth considering synthetic or machine-friendly blends for my future socks, just in case!

A new pair of socks are on the needles right now too! I'm already halfway done with a pair of Hunter's Socks for Jason. I'd promise WIP shots later, but they might be done by the time I update this blog next, so expect an FO post soon!

yarn-along iv

It's Wednesday again!
A few Wednesdays have passed without a post...but I'll just go ahead and forgive myself for that, hopefully you will too. Not a lot was happening on the personal knitting/reading front and I've been eager to use the lull right after midterms to burn through a small book or two and cast on something for me for once.

Coraline was finally finished [a cute book!], Hagakure and the Lord of the Rings are still on the backburner. I read through a pair of Leo Babauta books [a good pick me up for productivity/motivation help].

Today I'm about to start reading a gifted book from my boyfriend--Prisoners by Franz Molnar. I've put off reading this book for a while because it's written in a way that isn't too easy to read through [despite being such a small book..] This isn't even the second time I've attempted it from the start, I almost have the first 50 or so pages memorized by now.
This time, I'm determined to know the whole story.

On the knitting front, I've started a new pair of socks! You might remember when I stashed this yarn for this project. It's been on my mind for a while to make socks from this yarn, but it wasn't until I saw Susan's post of her handmade sock drawer that I went..what the hell, and just casted on. Toe-up socks, too! The idea was to have each skein become a separate sock, so the cuff is going to be as long as there is yarn left after the heel's turned. It's a really satisfying thing to see through.

I think i'm falling in love with socks and sock yarn. I've only completed one pair so far, and only really made one purchase of ~officially~ labelled sock yarn but can feel the pull already. It's so hard to explain but it's mesmerizing how unique and pretty this yarn looks both in skein and in FO form. I must knit all the things! AUAGHHH SOCKS

This post is made alongside many others in Gsheller's Wednesday Yarn-along!

goodbye february

This became a very honest and introspective month. You sucked, but thanks anyway, February.

It's been difficult to keep this blog updated, mostly because it's been difficult to put a lot of things into words.
I've been knitting up some pieces with stash yarn for no specific event coming up this year. It's sort of a vague goal but I really want to sell locally at something like a farmer's market. The face-to-face might be a really great experience for me and my little shop.
Next to that, just designing and knitting prototypes from sketches.
Oh, and mountains of coursework from school. Oops.
